I was living on a friend’s farm after losing mine due to DV. Fires all around me and l remember my father telling me along time ago, if the birds go you go, so l packed up and fled. I was invited back to the Snowy mountains were l come from. And offered work in the Snowy Hydro. Smoke stared to come over the mountains while we were working in Lobs Hole. So the black summer fires took my job and sadly I went into depression. Melt down! I had relocated back home and now sharing a 2 bedroom flat with 4 women. Luckily my name went down for housing when l had the melt down and covid had arrived. I travelled to Northern NSW to be closer to family. Then the floods came x2 No wonder one feels exhausted. As l worked in community aged care, driving in extreme weather conditions to help the elders. Good to be near the Grandchildren, but sometimes it floods so l can’t get through. And the humidity up here is extreme 😫

Ann's story

Brisbane, QLD

  • Drought
  • Fire
  • Flood
  • Health
  • Heatwave
  • Nature

I have two teenage children who are scared about their future and I am scared for them as well. The issue of climate change is on my mind always, yet I don’t feel I can discuss it as it makes everyone around me so uncomfortable so we bury or heads in the sand. The collective fear and grief is affecting many people I know. We know we will have to move away from Brisbane as climate change increases the temperature to an unbearable level with summers too hot to go outside. I spend a lot of time in natural outdoor environments for work and leisure and I see the effects of long dry periods, storms, raging bushfires and floods are having on the already fragmented, weed and pest infested landscapes that we have left. My heart breaks for what we are doing to this country.
