I’m really worried for the next generation, and the effects of climate change they will face. Will extreme weather events become the norm?
Middleton Grange, NSW
My name is Bianca, and I’m a law/commerce student at the University of New South Wales. I live in Western Sydney.
Over the years, I’ve noticed substantial changes in the weather patterns, particularly an increase in heavy rain, which has caused flash flooding in my suburb and the surrounding suburbs. This increase worries me. I’ve heard stories of people and their cars getting stuck in flood waters near my suburb. One of my friends can’t leave their house when the flash flooding occurs, as there is only one road in and one road out of their suburb. When flash floods occur, I’m scared to drive, as I’m worried that I may get stuck.
I’ve extremely concerned about what the future holds for all Australians – climate change affects all of us. I’m really worried for the next generation, and the effects of climate change they will face. Will extreme weather events become the norm? Will they be able to witness the beautiful rainforest, reefs, animals and plants Australia has to offer? Or will the effects of climate change destroy our country?

My mental health is being affected because of the devastating changes I’m seeing to the planet. Every day, I wake up with a feeling of dread. In the south west we are experiencing a long drought, forests are dying from lack of rain, critically endangered animals are losing their habitats. Over the summer the heat has been so intense, my family stays indoors as much as possible and the hot days are continuing into mid April with no sign of rain forecast. The local area recently experienced three simultaneous bush fires and I’m concerned about the emergency services’ ability to cope.
