Climate stories

Many people lost their homes because of the destruction that the cyclones have done. School buildings too, many schools stopped because of the building destruction.

Griselda ’s story

Port Vila, Vanuatu

I experienced two cyclones in March this year, Cyclones Judith and Kevin. Cyclone Judith arrived on Wednesday for a full day. She struck hard until the evening at 9 o’clock. Then she was cooling down. By the time Judith came, there was only rain. She gave a big heavy rain, the river was getting high and speedy. There was less wind but it happened, she struck some households roofs down, also trees.

Furthermore, Cyclone Kevin came on the following two days. He was very strong- there was not too much rain but strong winds blew. Kevin struck all the tree leaves down, even tree trunks. Everyone laid on the ground. What I’ve seen after these two natural disasters is that it brought a dry season to Vanuatu. Some areas in Port Vila don’t have water to drink. They must wait months for the water supply to be fixed. Also, the buildings. Many people lost their homes because of the destruction that the cyclones have done. School buildings too, many schools stopped because of the building destruction. What I noticed also is because every tree lost its leaves, and there is a hot atmosphere and no shade, and people lose their economic finance because they live or depend only on their garden cropping. Sadly, people had some injuries too.
