I am a young person who is concerned and angry that the government is continuing to expand coal and gas extraction after the International Energy Agency has made clear that we cannot continue extracting and burning new fossil fuels if we want to maintain a liveable home in the decades to come. We must be investing all the public money we can into adaptation and climate solutions with communities and climate justice at the heart of decision-making. I have personally experienced these climate impacts in the city and realise that the impacts felt by First Nations community in Zenadth Kes and other Pacific communities are much more extreme while those communities are hardly contributing to the crisis. Fossil fuel companies who have profited from the destruction of their homes and our collective home should be footing the bill for adaptation and climate solutions – not continuing to receive public taxpayer money via subsidies and rake in enormous profits.
