Climate stories

It was heart breaking to see how the climate change had a massive impact on our Island home. It was terrible to see how the water floats the streets, and even worse when it rains because how the river bark overflows and water rush through to the village.

Aunty Gina’s story

Boigu Island, QLD

  • Culture
  • Sea level rise
I would like to share my childhood memories growing up on Boigu Island. As younger sibling of Uncle Pabai, I remember every afternoon after school I always hang out with my friends and we would go swimming in front of the old Ibis store at the water front and sometimes play with the rocks when the tide is low. There was no boat ramp at that time. But today there is a boat ramp and a seawall, both built there to protect the waterfront from the sea level rising on the Island.
I’ve recently returned home after 10 years of living away from Boigu and I have noticed the community of Boigu is not the same. It was heart breaking to see how the climate change had a massive impact on our Island home. It was terrible to see how the water floods the streets, and even worse when it rains because how the river bark overflows and water rushes through to the village.
We love our island home because there are treasured memories and historical ties and stories of our ancestors and elders on Boigu, which have passed down from generation to generation. I believe our Identity and Culture makes us proud but our connection to our island home that keeps us stronger.

My husband and I, 79 and 76, have been impacted by increased water and power bills, used retirement savings to 1. put in an air-conditioner with the hotter summer seasons, 2. change from gas to electric heat bank hot water systems and electric induction stove hotplates and 3. put in solar panels – costing us $11,000 (even with government subsidies for solar) which we are unlikely to recoup before we die. The power costs are due to no or slow government on stopping new fossil fuel projects and supporting renewables. The Fossil Fuels interests are being put before the common good of all citizens and we need truth in media laws for government, political parties and all forms of media (print, radio and online esp social media.
