I’ve been experiencing a lot of impacts of climate change on my islands. Normally in my islands we made our own clothing with leaves and wood skins. But when we are facing a lot of cyclones, it destroys the trees and leaves so it makes us adapt to the western lifestyle to wear their clothes. The most things that Ni-Van people do is selling off the land (mama kroan) and cutting down trees for developments. People put money first, before nature and that’s why we have a lot of negative impacts in climate changes. People kill a lot of sea creatures for food at home, feast, sell for money and for tourist attractions. Also people dig sands for making houses instead of using local materials for local houses. And destroying sea creatures leads to sea level rise and some beautiful places are sinking. I’d like to stand up and fight for climate change in my country, Vanuatu.

I have been working as a scuba diving instructor and reef guide at the Great Barrier Reef for 11 years and in the last 7 years I have witnessed four mass coral bleaching events, in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022, which resulted in high rates of coral mortality.
