Cyclone Kevin struck at a category 4. The winds were very strong and it sounded like thunder. I was very scared, it blew off the roof of our house.
Port Vila, Vanuatu
I am from the Island of Malekula. I am 20 years old. It was my first year in the Emalus and I studied Agri-business. In early March 2023, I experienced two natural disasters – the cyclones. Their names were Judy and Kevin. Judy was the first to strike, it struck as a category 4. It destroyed our backyard garden and some of my grandpa’s useful trees. Then after that, Cyclone Kevin struck at a category 4. The winds were very strong and it sounded like thunder. I was very scared, it blew off the roof of our house. Then my dad moved us to our basement where we stayed until the cyclone was over. After the two cyclones I didn’t have water or electricity plus poor network for a month. But luckily none of my relatives died during that time so I really thank God for that.

The fires were absolutely terrifying and they raged around us for months. Everything was tinder dry from the drought, and when the fires came on a friday night the sky was so red and the wind was hot and wild. It really felt like the end of the world.
