My name is Wren. I am 11 years old. I really love spending time in nature and watching animals go about their day. This February, in Hobart, was one of its driest since records began in the early 1880s. We went on a camping trip to Maria Island and there was a brown bandicoot searching for food and water. The ground was cracking, it was so dry. It made me feel sad.
I noticed it in our backyard too, where the grass turned brown and many wallabies (including a mother and joey) came to our garden in search of food. We had to enclose our chicken’s food because the wallabies were so hungry, they were eating it. We left out water for them so that they would not die of thirst. Mum noticed all the plants that had died over summer at Freycinet National Park.
Last year I went to a rally with my family to protest against native forest logging. I can’t believe it still happens in Tasmania when we know how important these forests are. They are not just trees they are part of complex ecosystems.
I am so grateful to the Uncles for standing up to the government. I hope that they win the case to protect their islands and much more.
